Orthodontists | Teeth braces and retainers

A dentist is a doctor who works with several parts of the body. Areas of focus include the mouth, jaw, teeth, gums, and nerves. Orthodontists work in a more specialized section of the field. Their priority is the straightening of teeth.

An orthodontist diagnoses overbites, occlusions, misaligned teeth and jaws, and overcrowded mouths. After the diagnosis, the orthodontist tries to solve any issues they discover. If left untreated, overbites, underbites, open bites, and cross bites are all problems that will grow worse over time. An orthodontist is an expert who repairs these conditions.

An orthodontist has several tools to solve these alignment problems. Braces are the most famous solution. These appliances are bands that encircle the teeth. The orthodontist then bonds brackets on the front of the teeth, and the bands connect to them via wires. In combination, the structures pull teeth into an upright alignment, straightening them over time. The process isn’t immediate, but it’s extremely effective.

Teeth Braces

Teeth braces are wire-based appliances that orthodontists use to correct crowded and misaligned teeth or jaws. Many people who need dental braces get them during their early teenage years, but adults also can benefit from wearing braces. The goal of dental braces is to properly align your teeth and jaws to produce an even bite and pleasing smile.

Traditional metal braces are a very common Orthodontic option that is effective for correcting teeth. They are a very affordable Orthodontic treatment option to straighten teeth compared to other options. Metal braces are made of stainless steel and the elastics that connect the brackets come in a variety of colours. The different colours are a fun touch that let people show their personality and embrace the fact that braces are simply a part of the face.

Ceramic braces are very similar to traditional metal braces in function. The only difference is that the brackets are made of clear/tooth-colored ceramic material that doesn’t give the unpleasant appearance of a mouth filled with metal parts. The material helps prevent them from being seen from far and isn’t always visible in photos. To further lower visibility, they are coated with a compound that matches the colour of your teeth. Therefore, most wearers report feeling as if ceramic braces don’t impede their daily lives or ability to perform at school, work or in recreational activities. They are a very convenient and affordable Orthodontic treatment option in children and adults.

Invisalign (Removable Clear Aligners)

If braces aren’t a great option, an orthodontist may use an aligner instead. The best-known example is Invisalign. By design, it’s not visible from a distance, making your smile more attractive. That’s because an aligner doesn’t use metal wires or brackets. Patients like them since they’re removable.

Typically, each set of aligners is worn for one to three weeks, as close to 24 hours a day as possible — except when eating, brushing or flossing — until it's replaced by the next set. The entire series of aligners may take up to nine months or longer, allowing better alignment.

Retainers

After dental braces are removed, the newly straightened teeth need to be stabilized for a period of time (retention period) to prevent them from shifting back to their original position. This is accomplished with the use of a custom-made appliance typically made of plastic or plastic and metal wires that help teeth stay in place (retainer).

Retainers are usually removable, but may be fixed. Or a combination of fixed and removable may be used.

For cases which require only minor corrections, orthodontist may suggest going for retainers alone without going for braces.

Palate Expander

In extreme cases, an orthodontist may treat patients with a palate expander. It widens the arch of the upper jaw, giving the area more space. Another possibility is headgear, a more dramatic solution for misaligned teeth. This device connects the back of the head to a wire in the front of the mouth. Its purpose is to pull back front teeth while slowing an upper jaw in danger of growing too fast.
